Fort Vermilion's first direct contact with the "Outside" world was a telegraph line installed on Dec 11, 1930.
Before this, all correspondence
was via mail which sometimes made it to the Fort only 6 times a year! Mail was brought in by riverboat, dogsled, airplane, horse and wagon.
