DID YOU KNOW?

The design that Dia Thurston created for this sign has since become the unofficial logo of Fort Vermilion. You can find it, or allusions to it, on various articles of clothing and souvenirs.

Bicentennial Sign

The High Level Chamber of Commerce gifted the Bicentennial sign to Fort Vermilion to commemorate the 200th anniversary (1788-1988) of recorded exploration, trade and settlement in the region.

The Fort Vermilion and District Bicentennial Association logo which was designed by local artist, Dia Thurston, is featured on the sign. The base of the sign contains a time capsule to be opened in 2088.

Located at the D.A. Thomas Park,  the flood of 2020 swept the beautifully carved wooden sign away with its ice floes and flood waters. The time capsule remained intact. The sign was retrieved by Mackenzie County Post flood and restored. Again it stands stoically on the banks of the mighty Peace!
